Short Stories About a Bus Life Family

Our shuttle bus gutted out to start the design layout of our custom home.

Learning As We Go – Bus Build Progress, Winter Prep and Design Challenges!

March 10, 2026 by Grateful Mama

We’ve been chipping away at our shuttle bus build little by little. With limited time and changing our minds often about design has been challenging. Even with the temperature dropping, we’re still making progress. Our diesel heater should be arriving soon (thankfully!), which will make winter building a whole lot easier. In the meantime, we’re layering up, moving forward, and learning as we go.

Changing Plans… Again (and Again!)
One of the biggest takeaways from this phase of the build? Our design has changed — a lot. We’ve already scrapped and reworked our layout more times than we can count. Watching all the inspiring bus conversion videos on YouTube has definitely contributed to that! There are just so many creative builds out there — and it’s impossible not to want to incorporate the best of everything we see.

This is definitely a learning journey for us. We’re embracing the idea that there’s no perfect blueprint and that building a home on wheels is full of trial and error. From bathroom layouts to insulation strategies, each decision teaches us something new. Also, one design doesn’t fit everyone. Each build needs to suit individual or family needs. There in lies the design challenge. You need to really think and talk things out to ensure you’re not redoing something later. Or it is too late to make changes.

Winter Is Coming (And So Is Our Heater!)
Building a bus in the winter months? Not ideal. But here we are! With cold temperatures creeping in and the Christmas season making everything busier, we’re trying to stay ahead by ordering supplies early. Between shipping delays and unexpected stock issues, we’ve had to make some quick decisions to keep the project moving. Hopefully, none of those come back to haunt us later — but that’s the risk we’re willing to take.

What We’ve Been Working On Lately:
✔ Finalizing (and revising) the bathroom design
✔ Ordering and prepping insulation
✔ Planning around the winter weather
✔ Sorting out heating and climate control
✔ Figuring out what’s really essential vs. what can wait

We’re Learning As We Go
Neither of us has done a bus build before — but we’re not letting that stop us. We’re absorbing as much as we can from the amazing online community and just going for it. Mistakes are part of the deal, and we’re sharing them all here so others can learn with us.

Thanks for Following Along!
This blog is where we intended to share the real, raw, and exciting parts of the process. But life happened and I dropped the ball on posting and sharing our journey to my blog, not just to YouTube. So, five years in, I feel it is time to fix that. I am starting all the way back to our first video and sharing reflections/thoughts/advice in the hopes it will help others who are just beginning this journey of bus living.

We are a bus life family that are living life a little differently. We started this journey in 2020 and even though we have had to pivot, modify and adapt as our family has grown and the world has changed, we wouldn't have it any other way. Hope you learn something new while here and come back to see what we are up to next!
